When the motor turns and nothing rises, the drive train is where to look.
If the motor runs freely, sounds normal, and the cradle does not move, the connection between motor and drum has failed somewhere. A stripped gearbox is the usual cause. It is distinguishable from a motor fault because the motor sounds unloaded rather than strained.
A grinding sound under load points at gear damage. A rhythmic tick that speeds up with the motor usually points at a single damaged tooth. A gearbox that is quiet going down and loud coming up is being told about load, which narrows it further.
A gearbox weeping lubricant is running with less than it needs, and the wear accelerates from that point. Leaks are cheap to address and expensive to ignore, because the failure they lead to takes the gear set with it.
Most likely, particularly if the motor sounds unloaded. A motor straining against a load sounds different from one spinning freely, and that difference is usually audible from the dock.
