Limit switches tell the lift where to stop. They move slightly over time, and when they drift the lift can stop short, run past its intended travel, or refuse to start in one direction. The symptom often reads as a mechanical fault even though nothing mechanical has changed.
Every electrical connection on a dock is in a humid, salt-free but relentlessly wet environment. Corrosion at a terminal raises resistance, which produces heat and voltage drop, which then presents as a motor that seems weak. The motor is usually fine.
Power first: breaker, then any disconnect, then the switch itself. Complete silence is far more often supply or control than a failed motor, and it is the cheapest category to resolve.
